Amaryllis is toxic to cats. All parts of the plant contain substances (notably lycorine) that can cause stomach upset and other symptoms if ingested, with the bulb typically the most concentrated. Cats may also experience mouth irritation from the plant’s calcium oxalate crystals. If a cat chews or swallows any part of an amaryllis, monitor for drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, or decreased appetite, and seek veterinary care if symptoms are persistent or severe. To be safe, keep amaryllis out of reach of curious cats and consider choosing pet-safe alternatives for indoor decoration.
