Hairless cats are not truly hypoallergenic. Allergies to cats are mainly caused by a protein called Fel d 1, which is produced in saliva, skin oils, and urine, and is present regardless of coat length or hair presence. While hairless breeds like the Sphynx may shed less fur and thus spread fewer fur- related allergens, they still produce Fel d 1 and can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive people. Individual experiences vary, so some allergy sufferers report milder symptoms with hairless cats, but no cat breed can be considered completely hypoallergenic. If allergies are a concern, consider trying exposure to a hairless cat under supervision, using HEPA air purifiers, frequent cleaning, and consulting an allergist to explore personalized strategies.
