Body lotion is a moisturizer used to treat or prevent dry, rough, scaly, itchy skin and minor skin irritations such as diaper rash and skin burns from radiation therapy. Emollients are substances that soften and moisturize the skin and decrease itching and flaking. Some products are used mostly to protect the skin against irritation from wetness. Lotions typically contain eight types of ingredients:

  • Emollients: help maintain soft, smooth skin. Common emollients include petrolatum, lanolin, mineral oil, and dimethicone.

  • Humectants: draw water into the outer layer of skin. Common humectants include glycerin, lecithin, and propylene glycol.

  • Occlusives: form a barrier on the skin to prevent water loss. Common occlusives include lanolin oil and dimethicone.

  • pH Adjusters: help maintain the pH balance of the lotion. Common pH adjusters include sodium hydroxide.

  • Preservatives: prevent the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms in the lotion. Common preservatives include alcohol denat., chlorphenesin, and benzyl alcohol.

  • Solvents: dissolve other ingredients in the lotion. Common solvents include water and alcohol denat.

  • Fragrances: add a pleasant scent to the lotion. Fragrances can be synthetic or natural.

  • Active ingredients: some lotions contain active ingredients such as dimethicone, which is a skin protectant.

It is important to note that some body lotions may contain toxic ingredients that should be avoided, such as parabens, fragrances, and PEG-100 stearate. When choosing a body lotion, it is important to read the label and understand the ingredients to avoid any adverse reactions.
