Cats can have cinnamon in small quantities without it being toxic, but it is generally not recommended to feed cinnamon to cats. While cinnamon is not poisonous to cats, they lack the enzymes needed to properly digest it, and consumption of large amounts or certain forms of cinnamon (such as cinnamon oil) can cause health problems including stomach upset, respiratory irritation, low blood sugar, liver damage, and neurological issues. Cats may also react to cinnamon powder by sneezing or having breathing difficulties if inhaled. Because of these risks, it is safest to avoid giving cinnamon or cinnamon-containing foods to cats and keep cinnamon products out of their reach, especially cinnamon essential oils. Cats with health issues such as diabetes, respiratory conditions, allergies, or those that are very young or elderly should especially avoid cinnamon. If a cat accidentally ingests a small amount, monitoring for distress is advised, and if any symptoms occur, a vet should be consulted.
