Dogs can eat many types of beans safely, but they must be cooked and served plain without seasonings, oils, salt, or harmful ingredients like onion or garlic. Beans such as black beans, butter (lima) beans, chickpeas (garbanzo beans), green beans, kidney beans (only cooked), pinto beans, lentils, black- eyed peas, and soybeans (including edamame) are generally safe and nutritious for dogs. However, raw or dry beans (except soybeans) and certain types like baked beans or broad beans should be avoided as they can be toxic or cause digestive issues. Beans are a good source of fiber and protein for dogs but should be given in moderation, ideally not more than 10% of their daily calorie intake, and are not a substitute for meat in their diet.
