Dogs should not eat raw potatoes. Raw white potatoes contain solanine, a natural chemical that can be toxic to dogs and is more concentrated in green or sprouted parts and the skin.
Why raw potatoes are unsafe
Raw potatoes are hard for dogs to digest and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and general gastrointestinal upset. In larger amounts, solanine exposure may also lead to lethargy, weakness, and neurological signs like confusion or unsteadiness.
What to do if your dog ate some
If your dog just snatched a small piece of raw potato and seems normal, monitor for 24 hours for vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or unusual behavior. If your dog ate a larger amount, ate green or sprouted potato, or shows any symptoms, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic right away.
Safer ways to offer potato
If you want to share potato, only give plain, fully cooked potato (boiled or baked), without skin, butter, oil, salt, or seasonings, and only as an occasional small treat. Avoid giving potatoes at all to dogs with diabetes or those needing strict weight control, since potatoes are high in carbohydrates and can raise blood sugar.
