Yes, it is possible to get strep throat without tonsils. Although the tonsils are common sites for the infection due to being lymphoid tissues that can harbor the bacteria, the infection caused by group A Streptococcus can affect other parts of the throat as well. People who have had their tonsils removed may have a lower risk of getting strep throat or experience milder symptoms, but removal of tonsils does not make someone immune to the infection. Strep bacteria can infect the throat tissues beyond the tonsils, so the infection can still occur even in the absence of tonsils.
