Yes. Cats have anal glands (also called anal sacs). Each cat typically has two small sacs located on either side of the anus. These glands produce a foul- smelling fluid that is normally released onto stool during defecation and can also be expressed or used for scent marking. Both male and female cats have them, and issues can arise if the glands become impacted, infected, or rupture, which may require veterinary care. If you notice signs such as scooting, tail rubbing, licking or biting near the anal area, swelling, discomfort, or a strong, unusual odor, it’s a good idea to consult a veterinarian.
