On September 22, 2025, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck Berkeley, California, early in the morning at 2:56 a.m. The epicenter was near the intersection of Dwight Way and Piedmont Avenue, close to the UC Berkeley campus and situated along the Hayward Fault line. The quake was felt widely across the San Francisco Bay Area, including Oakland, San Francisco, and as far as Santa Rosa and Salinas. Minor damage was reported, such as broken windows and knocked- over items in stores, but there were no serious injuries or major structural damage. Two small aftershocks followed the main quake. The US Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated a 24% chance of aftershocks with magnitude 3 or greater in the coming week, with a very low chance of a significantly larger quake immediately following. The Hayward Fault, which caused this earthquake, is known to be overdue for a major event, but this quake was classified as light shaking by seismologists and though disruptive, it is not considered a large earthquake.
