Two ways in which biodegradable substances affect the environment are:
- Positive Impact: Biodegradable substances decompose through the action of microorganisms, resulting in the production of humus which enhances soil fertility by releasing essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, thus supporting plant growth and improving soil structure.
- Negative Impact: During decomposition, biodegradable substances can produce a foul smell and release some harmful gases. Additionally, heaps of biodegradable waste can become breeding grounds for insects such as flies and mosquitoes, which can carry diseases and affect the health of living organisms nearby.
These two points reflect both beneficial and adverse environmental effects of biodegradable substances.
