Sea turtles vary in size by species, with the leatherback sea turtle being the largest. Leatherbacks can grow up to about 2.56 meters (8.4 feet) in shell length and can weigh as much as 916 kilograms (about 2,019 pounds). Adult leatherbacks commonly measure between 1.5 to 2 meters (4.9 to 6.6 feet) long and weigh between 250 to 700 kilograms (550 to 1,540 pounds), with some reports of weight reaching up to 1,000 kilograms or more. Other sea turtle species are significantly smaller in comparison, with many averaging between 0.5 to 1.2 meters (about 1.6 to 4 feet) in shell length and lower weights.
