A dire wolf was roughly the size of the largest modern gray wolves, standing about 28 to 33 inches (just over 2 feet) tall at the shoulder and weighing on average around 130 pounds, with some specimens possibly reaching up to 150 pounds or more. Their length from head to tail was about 5 to 6 feet. Dire wolves had larger, broader heads and more robust bodies compared to today's gray wolves but had relatively lighter limbs.
