Hawaii has a total area of about 10,970 square miles, which includes roughly 6,400 square miles of land and 4,500 square miles of water. The state consists of 137 islands, with eight main islands being the most significant. The largest island, Hawaii Island (commonly called the Big Island), alone covers about 4,028 square miles, making it bigger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined. The entire archipelago stretches about 1,500 miles from east to west across the Pacific Ocean.
