The Indian Ocean is the world's third-largest ocean, covering an area of approximately 70,560,000 square kilometers (about 27,243,000 square miles), which is roughly 20% of the Earth's surface. It spans about 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) at its widest point, between the eastern coast of Africa and Western Australia. The Indian Ocean is about 5.5 times the size of the United States in terms of surface area. Its average depth is around 3,741 meters (12,274 feet), with the deepest point located in the Sunda Deep of the Java Trench at about 7,450 meters (24,442 feet) below sea level.
