Whales can dive to impressive depths depending on the species. The sperm whale holds the record among whales for deep diving, regularly diving to depths exceeding 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) and staying submerged for up to 90 minutes. Cuvier's beaked whales have been recorded diving even deeper, to nearly 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). In comparison, baleen whales, such as the blue whale, typically dive shorter distances around 10-20 minutes and are not known for extremely deep dives. Killer whales typically dive around 100 meters but can reach depths of up to 1,000 meters. These diving capacities are supported by specific physiological adaptations to withstand high pressure and oxygen depletion at depth.
