Lake Atitlán is approximately 340 meters (about 1,120 feet) deep, making it the deepest lake in Central America. The lake covers an area of about 130 square kilometers (50 square miles) and is volcanic in origin, formed by a caldera from a supervolcanic eruption around 84,000 years ago.
