The East River in New York City is about 16 miles (26 km) long and varies in depth significantly. The main navigable channel of the East River is approximately 40 feet (12 meters) deep near the southern parts around The Battery and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Moving eastward through Hell Gate and to Throgs Neck, the depth generally ranges around 35 feet (11 meters). However, eastward from there, at mean low tide, the depth can reach as much as 168 feet (51 meters) in some areas. Thus, while most of the navigable sections are around 35-40 feet deep, certain deeper areas can exceed 50 feet and potentially much more in isolated spots.
