Hyacinth bulbs should generally be planted about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) deep in well-drained soil. The pointed end of the bulb should face up, and bulbs spaced about 4 to 6 inches apart. In colder climates, planting a bit deeper (around 6 inches) helps protect the bulbs over winter. After planting, cover with soil and water once to settle the soil around the bulbs. Adding 1 to 2 inches of mulch on top helps insulation in cold weather.
