George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after being arrested by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During the arrest, a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down on the street. Floyd repeatedly told the officers that he could not breathe. Despite Floyd becoming motionless and losing his pulse, Chauvin continued to press his knee on Floyd's neck. Floyd was pronounced dead at a medical center shortly afterward. The official cause of death determined by two autopsies was homicide due to cardiopulmonary arrest complicated by law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression. Contributing factors included fentanyl intoxication and underlying heart disease, but these were not the direct causes. The prolonged neck restraint was the critical factor in his death.
