John Lennon died as a result of assassination by gunshot. On the evening of December 8, 1980, outside the Dakota apartment building in New York City, Lennon was shot four times in the back by Mark David Chapman, who fired five hollow-point bullets from a .38 special revolver. Lennon staggered into the building's lobby, saying "I'm shot! I'm shot!" before collapsing. He was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:15 p.m. at age 40. The autopsy revealed that the bullets caused severe damage to his left lung, major blood vessels near his heart, and other vital organs, leading to hypovolemic shock from loss of more than 80% of his blood volume. Despite medical efforts to resuscitate him for about 20 minutes, the injuries were fatal
