Peter Brock died in a car crash on September 8, 2006, while competing in the Targa West rally in Western Australia. His 2001 Daytona Coupe car lost control on a downhill left-hand bend near Gidgegannup, northeast of Perth, and hit a tree on the driver's side door. The impact was almost instantaneous, and Brock died at the age of 61. His co-driver Mick Hone was injured but survived in stable condition. The crash was determined to be caused by high speed, and no coronial inquest was held. Brock was given a Victorian state funeral in Melbourne, and a memorial was placed at Sandown Raceway, where he had much success during his racing career.
