To get a Social Security card, follow these steps:
- Complete the application form (Form SS-5) : You can get this form online from the Social Security Administration (SSA) website or at your local SSA office
- Gather required documents : You must provide original documents proving your age, identity, and U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration/work-authorized status. For children under 18, parents’ Social Security numbers may be required. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must show a valid nonwork reason for requesting a card
- Submit your application :
- If you are applying for your first Social Security number and are age 12 or older, you must apply in person at a local SSA office
* You can mail your application and documents or take them in person. Your original documents will be returned to you
* If you are a non-citizen student or worker, you may need to wait 10 days after arriving in the U.S. before applying to allow government systems to update
- Receive your card : After your application is approved, your Social Security card will be mailed to you, typically within about two weeks
Additional notes :
- If you already have a Social Security number but lost your card, you can request a replacement card online if you meet certain criteria (age 18+, U.S. mailing address, valid ID) or in person at an SSA office
- International students and workers should coordinate with their Designated School Official (DSO) or employer and bring appropriate immigration and work authorization documents
- Applying for a Social Security number can sometimes be done simultaneously with applying for work authorization (Form I-765) for eligible immigrants
