To play Go Fish, follow these steps:
- Use a standard 52-card deck. If 2-3 players are playing, deal 7 cards each; if 4-5 players, deal 5 cards each. The remaining cards form the face-down stock pile
- Players look at their cards but keep them hidden from others
- The player to the dealer's left starts by asking any one opponent for cards of a specific rank (for example, "Do you have any threes?"). The asking player must have at least one card of that rank in their hand to ask for it
- The player who is asked must hand over all cards of that rank they have. If they have none, they say "Go fish!" and the asking player draws the top card from the stock pile
- If the asking player receives one or more cards of the requested rank (either from the opponent or from the stock if they drew the card they asked for), they get another turn and may ask for any rank again
- When a player collects all four cards of the same rank (a "book"), they place the four cards face up in front of them
- If a player runs out of cards, they draw five new cards from the stock (if available) and continue playing
- The game continues until all thirteen books have been collected or the stock runs out and no players have cards left
- The winner is the player with the most books at the end
Variations exist, such as playing for pairs instead of four-of-a-kind, or giving only one card when asked, but the above is the standard way to play
. In summary, Go Fish is a turn-based game where players ask others for cards to complete sets of four matching ranks, drawing from the stock if unsuccessful, and the goal is to collect the most complete sets
