To take a screenshot on a MacBook, you have several options using keyboard shortcuts:
- Capture the entire screen: Press Shift + Command (⌘) + 3 simultaneously. The screenshot will be saved automatically to your desktop
- Capture a selected portion of the screen: Press Shift + Command + 4 , then drag the crosshair pointer to select the area you want to capture. Release the mouse or trackpad button to take the screenshot, which will be saved to your desktop
- Capture a specific window or menu: Press Shift + Command + 4 , then press the Spacebar. The pointer changes to a camera icon. Click the window or menu you want to capture. The screenshot will be saved to your desktop
- Use the Screenshot app for more options: Press Shift + Command + 5 to open a toolbar with options to capture the entire screen, a window, or a selected portion. This toolbar also allows screen recording and setting options like screenshot location and timer
Screenshots typically appear as files on your desktop named like “Screen Shot [date] at [time].png”
. If you want to copy the screenshot to the clipboard instead of saving it as a file, hold the Control key along with any of the above shortcuts
. These methods work on all modern MacBooks and macOS versions
