How a Golf Handicap Works
- Handicap Index Calculation : Your handicap index is calculated using your recent scores, course ratings, and slope ratings. Specifically, each round's score is converted to a "score differential" using the formula:

- You record multiple rounds (usually 20), and your handicap index is the average of your lowest 8 score differentials out of those rounds, multiplied by a factor (typically 0.96) to reward better performance
- Course Handicap : To play on a specific course, your handicap index is adjusted to that course's difficulty (slope rating and course rating) to get a course handicap:

This number represents how many strokes you receive to adjust your gross score for that course
- Using Handicap in Play : During a round, your net score is calculated by subtracting your course handicap from your gross score. This net score is used to determine the winner when players of different abilities compete
- Match Play : In match play, the difference between players' handicaps determines how many strokes the higher-handicap player receives, allocated on the hardest holes as indicated on the scorecard
