Early menopause is defined as menopause that occurs before age 45, while premature menopause occurs before age 40. Some individuals may begin experiencing menopause symptoms as early as their mid-30s. The main sign of early or premature menopause is the cessation of menstrual periods before these ages. Both early and premature menopause can occur naturally or as a result of medical treatments, surgeries, or certain health conditions. About 5% of women experience early menopause, and roughly 1% go through premature menopause.
