Jesus carried the cross for roughly between 600 meters (about 1/3 of a mile) to 650 yards (about 0.37 miles) on the way to his crucifixion site. This route is traditionally known as the Via Dolorosa or "Way of Suffering" and is about 600 meters long from near the Antonia Fortress to Golgotha, the place of crucifixion. However, it is believed that Jesus carried only the crossbeam (the horizontal part of the cross), not the entire cross, as the vertical part would have already been fixed at the site. During this walk, Jesus was severely weakened by scourging and beatings, to the extent that Simon of Cyrene was compelled to help carry the crossbeam. The journey was uphill and physically grueling. Some sources estimate the total distances Jesus walked from his arrest to crucifixion might be around 1 to 1.5 miles (approximately 1.6 to 2.4 kilometers) due to various detours and stops.
