A hippo can run on land at speeds of up to 19 miles per hour (about 30 kilometers per hour) over short distances. Despite their large and bulky appearance, hippos are surprisingly fast, especially for their size. Their speed allows them to quickly cover ground when they feel threatened or need to assert dominance.
