Planes vary in speed depending on their type and purpose. Commercial airplanes typically cruise at speeds between 500 and 600 miles per hour (mph), with takeoff speeds around 150 to 180 mph and landing speeds around 150 to 165 mph. Private jets usually fly faster than commercial planes, often reaching speeds between 600 and 700 mph. Military aircraft are the fastest, capable of speeds from about 1,200 mph up to 2,200 mph or more, with some special reconnaissance jets like the SR-71 Blackbird exceeding 2,100 mph. The fastest commercial jet ever was the Concorde, which flew at about 1,350 mph, more than twice the speed of typical commercial jets.
