The Ryder Cup scoring works with a total of 28 points available, split across different match formats over three days. Each match is worth one point, and if a match is tied after the 18 holes, each side earns half a point. The first team to reach at least 14.5 points wins the Ryder Cup. If the overall score ends in a 14-14 tie, the defending champion retains the trophy. The 28 matches include:
- Eight foursomes matches (teams of two golfers alternate shots with one ball),
- Eight fourball matches (teams of two golfers each play their ball, lowest score on a hole wins),
- Twelve singles matches (one-on-one matches).
Points are awarded based on match results: a match win leads to one point for the winning team, and a tie results in 0.5 points for each team. This format emphasizes winning individual holes and matches rather than stroke play totals. The first team to surpass 14 points secures the championship title, with a rare tie allowing the defending champion to keep the Cup.
