Colace (docusate sodium), a stool softener, generally takes about 12 to 72 hours to work and produce a bowel movement. It works by increasing the water content in the stool, making it softer and easier to pass, but it does not stimulate bowel movements directly. For some Colace 2-in-1 products (which combine stool softening and a stimulant), a bowel movement may occur within 6 to 12 hours. Colace is not intended for immediate relief and may take one to three days to be effective. It is recommended to take it with a full glass of water and not to use it for longer than one week unless directed by a doctor. Unlike stimulant laxatives like Dulcolax, which work faster (usually within 8-12 hours), Colace provides a gentler, cramp-free relief of constipation.
