Vladimir Putin has effectively been in power in Russia since late 1999, so a bit over 25 years as of 2025.

He became acting president when Boris Yeltsin resigned on 31 December 1999 and then was first elected president in March 2000, taking office in May 2000. He served two presidential terms until 2008, then was prime minister from 2008 to 2012 while retaining dominant political influence. He returned to the presidency in 2012 and has remained president since, with constitutional changes allowing him to continue running for additional terms.
