A standard field hockey game lasts 60 minutes, divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each. This format has been in place since 2019; prior to that, matches were typically two halves of 35 minutes each
. Between quarters, there are short breaks: a two-minute break after the first and third quarters, and a 15-minute halftime break after the second quarter
. In some levels of play, such as high school, the game may be played in two 30-minute halves instead of quarters
