The total number of bombs dropped during the Blitz varied by city and phase, but broadly speaking, the Luftwaffe dropped a staggering amount. Specifically for London, it is estimated that about 16,331 long tons (16,593 metric tons) of bombs were dropped during the Blitz, including high explosive and incendiary bombs. More than 450,000 individual bombs were reportedly dropped over the whole period on various British cities, including London. For example, on the devastating night raid of May 10-11, 1941, alone, German bombers dropped 711 tons of high explosive bombs and 86,173 incendiary bombs on London. The Blitz lasted from September 1940 to May 1941, with London being bombed on 57 consecutive nights at one point and other cities like Birmingham and Coventry also heavily bombed with thousands of bombs.
