There are nine major food allergens recognized in the United States. These are: peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish (crustacean shellfish), and sesame. Sesame became the ninth major allergen officially requiring labeling in packaged foods as of January 1, 2023. These nine allergens account for about 90% of all food allergy reactions according to U.S. regulations and the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act.
