These are individuals whose remains have not yet been positively identified through DNA analysis or other methods, despite ongoing forensic efforts. The total number of people who died in the 9/11 attacks was 2,977 victims, excluding the hijackers. Efforts to identify victims continue with advancements in DNA technology providing some new identifications even many years after the event.
