On September 11, 2001, a total of 189 people died as a result of the attack on the Pentagon. This includes 64 people who were on American Airlines Flight 77, which was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon, and 125 people who were inside the Pentagon itself at the time of the crash
. The 125 victims inside the Pentagon were a mix of military personnel and civilians, including 70 civilians and 55 military members, many of whom worked for the U.S. Army or Navy. Among them was Lieutenant General Timothy Maude, the highest-ranking military official killed in the attack
. Thus, the total death toll at the Pentagon site was 189 people.
