Jupiter has four main rings in its ring system:

  • The Halo Ring : A thick, inner torus-shaped ring closest to Jupiter, extending roughly from 92,000 km to 122,500 km in radius, about 12,500 km thick. It is composed mainly of fine dust and has a neutral or blue color.
  • The Main Ring : A relatively bright, very thin ring just outside the halo ring, about 6,500 km wide and very thin (around 30 km thick in parts). It is reddish in color and bounded by the orbits of the small moons Metis and Adrastea.
  • The Amalthea Gossamer Ring : A faint, wide ring extending from about 129,000 km to 182,000 km, composed of dust from the moon Amalthea.
  • The Thebe Gossamer Ring : Another faint, wide ring extending from about 129,000 km to 226,000 km, made of dust from the moon Thebe.

These four rings together form Jupiter's faint and dusty ring system, discovered in 1979 by Voyager 1 and studied by subsequent missions and telescopes
