Xylem tissue is made up of four types of elements that work together. These are:

  • Tracheids : Long, tubular dead cells with thick walls that help in water conduction and provide structural support.
  • Vessels (Vessel elements) : Shorter tubular cells that form continuous tubes for efficient water transport, mainly found in angiosperms.
  • Xylem parenchyma : The only living cells in xylem, responsible for storage of food and helping in lateral transport.
  • Xylem fibres : Dead cells with lignified walls that provide mechanical support to the plant.

These four elements together constitute the complex tissue of xylem, facilitating water conduction, mineral transport, storage, and support in vascular plants
