The human spine normally consists of 33 vertebrae in total. These vertebrae are divided into regions as follows:
- Cervical spine: 7 vertebrae
- Thoracic spine: 12 vertebrae
- Lumbar spine: 5 vertebrae
- Sacral spine: 5 fused vertebrae forming the sacrum
- Coccygeal spine: 4 fused vertebrae forming the coccyx (tailbone)
Excluding rare variations, the total number of vertebrae ranges from 32 to 35 in most people.
