The average weight of top division sumo wrestlers has increased over time, reaching a record average weight of approximately 166 kilograms (366 pounds) as of 2019. Individual sumo wrestlers can weigh much more, with some of the heaviest reaching weights in excess of 250 kilograms (550 pounds) or more, and a few exceptional cases even near or above 290 kilograms (around 640 pounds).
