Before Terry Fox died, he had raised over $24.17 million for cancer research through his Marathon of Hope. He stopped running on September 1, 1980, due to the return of cancer in his lungs, but from his hospital bed, he continued to encourage donations for cancer research. Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981, at the age of 22. His legacy has since continued to raise over $900 million through the annual Terry Fox Run held worldwide.
