For a standard 9‑inch pumpkin pie, a good starting point is about 2 to 2½ teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice mixed into the filling.
Basic amount
- Use 2 teaspoons if you like a milder, more subtle spice flavor.
- Use 2½ teaspoons if you prefer a warmer, more pronounced spice flavor, which many “from scratch” recipes use for one pie.
Adjusting for taste and size
- If your recipe already lists cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, etc., you can usually add up all those spice measurements and substitute the same total amount of pumpkin pie spice instead (1:1 by total volume).
- For a deeper spice flavor in a rich or extra‑large pie, you can increase slightly (up to about 3 teaspoons, or 1 tablespoon), but go gradually to avoid overpowering the pumpkin.
