Smear tests, or cervical screening tests, are generally recommended to be done at regular intervals depending on your age and health region. For people aged 25 to 49, the typical interval is every three years, while those aged 50 to 64 are usually invited every five years. In Scotland and Wales, the screening interval is every five years for ages 25 to 64. England moved to a five-year interval in June 2025 due to a more accurate HPV primary screening test replacing the traditional smear test. After age 64, routine screening is usually no longer offered if previous results have been normal and there are no risk factors. More frequent testing may be needed if previous results showed abnormalities or positive HPV results. People with a cervix but registered as male can request screening through their GP. Screening is typically not recommended under age 25 due to low risk and high rates of normal cell changes at younger ages.
