Bitcoin's difficulty adjustment mechanism occurs approximately every 2,016 blocks. Since Bitcoin blocks are mined roughly every 10 minutes, this adjustment happens about every two weeks. The purpose of this adjustment is to keep the average block time close to 10 minutes by increasing or decreasing the mining difficulty based on how quickly the previous 2,016 blocks were mined.
