The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meets annually in regular sessions beginning on the third Tuesday of September. These sessions run intensively from September to December and then typically resume in January until all issues on the agenda are addressed, often just before the start of the next session. In addition to these regular annual sessions, the UN can also convene special sessions and emergency special sessions as needed. Special sessions occur at the request of the Security Council or member states, and emergency special sessions can be called within 24 hours when urgent action is required. The UN Security Council and other UN bodies may meet more frequently as required, but the primary, structured, yearly meeting is the General Assembly session.
