The World Athletics Championships are held biennially (every two years). Initially, the first three editions were held every four years, but since 1991, the event has taken place every two years, usually in odd-numbered years to avoid clashing with the Olympic Games, which occur every four years in even-numbered years. For example, the 20th edition will be held in Tokyo from September 13 to 21, 2025.
