Most mattresses should be rotated about every 3–6 months, but the exact schedule depends on the type of mattress and the manufacturer’s instructions. Some foam and latex mattresses can be rotated just 1–2 times per year, while older innerspring mattresses may benefit from more frequent rotation.
General guideline
For many modern mattresses (memory foam, latex, hybrid, newer innerspring), rotating 180 degrees once or twice a year is usually sufficient to keep wear even and extend lifespan. If you notice sagging, body impressions, or uneven comfort before that, rotate sooner.
By mattress type
- Memory foam and latex: Rotate 1–2 times per year (every 6–12 months), unless the brand suggests every 3–6 months.
- Newer innerspring and most hybrids: Rotate every 3–6 months.
- Older two-sided innerspring: Flip and rotate more often, up to a few times per year.
New mattresses
Many brands recommend rotating more frequently for the first few months (for example, every 2 weeks to monthly) to allow fillings to settle evenly. After that “break‑in” period, you can move to a 3–6 month schedule.
When to flip vs not
Most modern mattresses are one-sided and should only be rotated, not flipped, especially if they have a specific comfort layer on top. Only mattresses labeled flippable, dual‑sided, or reversible should be flipped, usually every 3–6 months.
