Amsterdam is approximately 750 years old as a city. The first official mention of Amsterdam dates back to 1275, when it was granted toll privileges by Count Floris V. The city developed as a fishing village around the end of the 12th century and grew around a dam in the Amstel river. Although there is archaeological evidence of human presence in the area dating back to the Neolithic era (up to 4600 years ago), Amsterdam as a city has a recorded history beginning in the 13th century. In 2025, Amsterdam is celebrating its 750th anniversary since its first documented city status around 1275-1306.
