Sikhism is about 550 years old. It originated in the late 15th century during the life of Guru Nanak, who was born in 1469 and lived until 1539. Sikhism began in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent and developed through the teachings of Guru Nanak and his nine successors, with the human line of gurus ending in the early 18th century. Today, Sikhism is one of the youngest major world religions with approximately 25-30 million adherents worldwide.
